You know best how to do this. Just remember that upwards of $16 billion will be spent on far less illuminating or effective campaign activities (particularly paid media that produces anxiety and campaign fatigue). You can be a little of an antidote to the negativity and do some of that “energizing” that people need when they think about what we, as a nation and government, can do to better in supporting children and families (and electing Kamala Harris).
Interspersed on this website are some graphics, which can be used to accompany a tweet, an Instagram, or a facebook posting. All can be used to suggest people go to this website. There are even a few videos featuring the Vice-President that can be referenced. A starter set is in the resources, below.
You might have guessed that I’ve done a few of these, myself,. One of my guest opinions is in the resources below, along with some sample LTEs that you can adapt or develop for a blog.
I did the “Grandparents for Harris-Walz” yard sign because I wanted to emphasize that seniors and grandparents care about more than Medicare and Social Security – why else would we be talking all the time about what our grandchild just did?
One of my favorite things about the Women’s March was its grounds-up philosophy and encouragement of people to make their own signs. Yard signs are not a “high art form” and we all have a little creativity we can share, so go for it (and its okay to do a Grandparents for…) if that suits you.
It’s not necessary, but it sometimes is good to have a “leave behind” after talking with someone or when sharing information at a meeting or event. The resources have templates for such leave-behinds that can be cheaply printed off, as needed – in the form of “palm cards” (front and back index cards) or “bookmarks”. (12 per oage)
Money does matter, and, if you are going to give to the Harris campaign, doing so through “Caregivers for Harris” or “Child and Family Advocates for Harris-Walz” is a way to do so while letting the campaign know why.
There also are key Congressional races – to get at least five more votes in the U.S. House of Representatives and to retain or expand the majority in the U.S. Senate – which is needed to ensure that working majority in Congress to enact Harris’ plan. Brief biographies of some of the champions for this agenda who can move seats from Red to Blue are in the resources.
In addition, several organizations are doing more grassroots organizing and educating around the care agenda, particularly in battleground states.
These include: Care Can’t Wait, Parents Together Action Fund, and MomsRising Together. Their websites are worth a look, and Care Can’t Wait has a good campaign guide and Parents Together has great information on how to appeal to parents around the care agenda that are provided in the resources.
If you are in a health, education, or human service profession – or if you or a family member who simply has needed extra care and help – you know frontline workers in care occupations. That means nursing assistants, child care workers, home visitors, personal care providers, and direct care workers. They were the sheroes of our response to the Covid-19 pandemic. (yes, about ninety percent are women) They also mostly are hugely underpaid and make up six percent of the nation’s workforce (and voters). Because of low pay and lack of support, we face shortages in these fields at the exact time we need more of them.
Reach out and let them know you value what they do and that you are supporting Kamala Harris because she has their back. They may well not know that Kamala Harris is championing an agenda that includes paying them more. Imagine what that would do for them, growing the middle class, and the economy.
The Harris Care agenda is a continuation of the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to caregivers. President Biden rightly stated, "If we want the best economy in the world, we need the best caregiving economy in the world."
At the same time, those nine million workers in frontline caregiving occupations are among the lowest paid workers in society -- with median incomes between $12 and $15 per hour. Barbara Ehrenreich has contended that they are our nation's biggest philanthropists (in terms of foregone wages), and she is not wrong.
If we paid them better, it's a win-win-win-win proportion: (1) We would have the workforce we need to for our families and communities; (2) We would create more decent-paying jobs needed to build the middle class; (3) We would have more money would be circulating in our economy; and (4) We would have the workforce behind the workforce that advances overall economic productivity.
